Thank you both - I've been practising and blowing my little lips off and have finally got it!! I think the problem was a combination of airstream direction and simply not holding down the split key on the foot joint properly. (What IS that called? Its gone completely out of my head!) Anyway, "Away i...

Frustrated - can't get lower C!

Hi all, Long time no visit for me for various reasons! Anyway, I'm the proud owner of a Trevor James now and my playing is much improved (despite not having the time to practice as I often as I would like) but I'm having lots of trouble with lower C. I have tried adjusting how much of my lip covers ...

Hypothetically...which flute?

I've been looking - the Odyssey is still giving me problems - and I quite like:

Trevor James TJ10X II

Jupiter 511E-II (quite like the idea of the curved head as my arms are very short!)

Yamaha 311

Which one would you get?

Yes, it sort of clicked while I was thinking about it earlier on.

What do you do when pieces aren't marked with an indicated speed? I'm ok if I already know the piece I'm having a go at, but if I don't know it I find it hard to pick up on how it should probably sound.

3/4, 4/4, 6/8 time etc

How do these correspond to settings on a metronome - particularly the online one on here? (Hopefully that isn't a particularly daft question!)

Oh good, I'm glad you said that as I did do a search on here and saw it mentioned so I ordered some from a UK site (along with a few extra cleaning cloths and other bits to make the postal charge worthwhile!) I'm having trouble with lower D now - I can do E and F no problem at all, but as soon as I ...

Well, I'm having better success from the flute this morning, so I guess I was just all tired out last night. I think what I will do is save up a bit more so I can buy something better for my next one, and persevere with this one for the time being. Got another question though - what's good for dry l...

Thanks flutepicc06 :D

Right, I have a £100 budget to buy a second-hand flute to learn on (according to hubby) - what sort of thing should I be going for?

Its an Odyssey like Nas's (although second-hand) - I mostly bought it just to have a play around and see if I could still do it, and apparently I can now play A B G B flat C and F. I can play some of the songs in the Abracadabra book, so thats's a good start I guess, but it doesn't sound like a good...

Hmmm...I dunno - still think there's something wrong with the thing. I'm playing notes and hubby is playing the same note on his keyboard and they're not the same!

Should they be?

Got something resembling notes out of it although I'm going to need a LOT of practice!! Has anybody got any tips for people with small hands and short fingers? I'm finding things a bit of a stretch! (Although I've just realised I was holding down the wrong key that you use with your left index finge...

Well...my flute arrived...

...but I don't think it works :( I know I have to relearn all the fingerings as its years since I last picked one up and can't remember any of them, but pressing any combination of keys doesn't make a difference to the sound produced by having all fingers off the keys at all. The keys aren't stickin...

Cleaning a flute?

Hi all, I'm new here. I took up the flute at exactly the wrong time in secondary school and gave up about a year later due to not having enough time to devote to it with revision and exams etc. Fast forward 20-something years and I've decided to have another crack at it. :D I didn't want to pay a hu...
