I would also like to inquire about 'pushing the embrouchure out' and 'embrouchure curved down'; do you mean moving the upper lip forward and causing the upper lip to lower respectively There has been descriptions made to using a 'smiling embouhure' where the corners of your mouth are turned up, whi...

your making me feel old  I've just picked my flute up again and I'll be celebrating my 33rd birthday in April. Once I've completed my next exam I'm considering going back to Uni externally to obtain a Diploma in Music Teaching. So no I don't think your old. How you stand out will be with your ...

Have you tried, just practicing with the head joint only, and practicing different octaves with the end of the head joint (the part that attaches to the flute) covered and uncovered. This helped me when I was starting out, and then when I picked the flute up again after a 15year hiatus. This way you...

congratulations, for getting through it,

I'm currently studying this piece for my AMEB 8th grade (AMEB = Australian Music Examination Board, for the non-Australian players).

It still tires me out, but hopefully by exam time it will be a breeze, just so long as I put in the hard work now.

try starting the chromatic scale at a different note but finishing on the usual note. eg. if you are practicing chromatic starting on C try starting on C2 but come back all the way to C, this way you will be training your mind to take breaths at different points of the scale. Then when you have deve...

I have 2 dogs one old, one young. The old one just goes about his business. But my young dog even sits at the door for a bit to listen or just for company. So no I don't think it is at a frequency that will hurt them. That's to say you are playing your flute in a way that was intended for the flute ...

I sometimes sit, it depends on how long I'm practicing for. I generally start out standing and then sit towards the end. But when I do sit, I always sit on the edge of the seat and never slouch. So I don't lose my support or air intake ability.

Trying to locate recording of 'Impatiens' composer R Kean

This is probably a stretch, but I was wondering if anyone out in the web o sphere has a recording or knows where I can find a recording of Impatiens. I am due to start learning it for my next flute exam. Unfortunately it is one of those pieces that interpretation plays a major role, as there is no t...

Sometimes you have to practice 2 bars for 45 minutes in order to get it down. I think we've all been there (I know I have). I've also been in a similar situation with the dreaded F#3 and other  evil notes/evil passages. What I do to help, instead of constantly playing the 2 bars over and o...

I don't have any ballet experience either, but I believe practicing good posture while playing the flute is an important aspect of playing. By concentrating on extending the spine and lowering the shoulders, I believe you create a more open passage way for air to travel to and from the lungs. At fir...

Yeah I'm new too, I've just started playing flute again after a 15 year hiatus. 15 years ago I didn't have the luxury of internet access, but now I'm able to get so many answers to questions off of the net  . If your looking for other good books for helpful instructions try out Trevor Wye. He h...
