Re: flute pad materials
There are some degradation problems with them reacting to silver Yes, now that you mention it, if I remember rightly, people sometimes used rubber bands when a spring broke, but that's not a good idea, as rubber bands contain sulfur and this can react with silver. (might be something to do with sul...

Re: About the shakuhachi flute
Since there are some links above, which I haven't looked at yet, I thought I'd bump this thread rather than start another. You can get a plastic 1.8' "shakuhachi yuu", but it's not a lot cheaper than a bamboo one, which is a pity. I would like a 2.4' one (failing that, just use an alto flute), and I...

More on ring key plugs
The ring key plugs on a Yamaha YFL372H are just hard plastic and not very nice. I have taken them out and of course kept them, but I wonder if it is usual to buy nicer plugs in case you want to put them back in again, or are the standard hard plastic ones OK in your view? Any recommendations?

Re: Do I need my Pinky on certain notes?
Being new to the flute, I find balancing it can be tricky. Like the OP, I don't notice any intonation problems, but on t...

Re: Buying a Step Up Flute
...Yamaha 577 HCT/LPGP...should I get the 677 instead?... am unsure of if there are any big differences?... As far as I can tell, the 577 has a solid silver headpiece, whereas the 677 is all solid silver. It takes a little while to navigate Yamaha's pages. They call their 500-700 series "profession...

Re: newbie here
Hi, my name is Andrew from London. I played the oboe a lot in the 70s. For 3 years now my main instrument has been the violin, but I've been wanting a flute since about 1980, and I finally bought one last year, lol! I mainly play classical, but I've also got some books of folk music and Chinese musi...
