I had that problem too when I started double-tonguing. Don't worry. Double-tonguing doesn't happen overnight. From personal experience, the key to double-tonguing is repetition, time, and a whole lot of patience. Do it at a slow tempo (ie 85 bpm) and work your way up. And I don't think it'll clean u...

Unfortunately, my technical training hasn't been great because I don't have private teachers - my parents aren't wholehearted supporters of music education. I had one when I just started, but he taught mostly beginners and intermediates, and since I learned pretty quickly, I outgrew his studio withi...

Thanks for the replies! MeLizzard - I am currently looking at about the first quarter of Gaubert's Fantaisie (I've the book Flute Music by French Composures), since I'm sure my director doesn't have the time to sit through the entire piece! It explores all three octaves, so I can show off my range, ...

Music selection

As the school year approahes, I'm selecting music for various audtions. One audition simply requires a piece demonstrating technicality and musicality. Well... my technique needs working on, though it's not totally hopeless  , but I do have pretty good tone and musicality. So to all the teache...

You can play extra loud in class if flutes aren't being heard (a rare problem!), but please don't practice in constant forte or double forte! You need to know how to play in all dynamic levels, so practicing should range from pp to ff, depending on the piece. And my lord, fluttiegurl, 30 flutes?! I ...

Well, we all came into this world without a clue of how to read music and play instruments, so the best thing is to first get yourself a private teacher. He or she will then teach you how to read and play music. Yes, it's very important to know how to read music and not just play by rote! After that...

 I went from starting quite late (in eighth grade) and without a teacher (I had two for some time, but they weren't great) to playing at the college level and even beating some others in auditions who've been playing longer and with private teachers. Oh, so much to work on - technique...

All the beginner models of Yamaha (200s series) should be fine flutes. I own and onced played a YFL 225II, and I honestly don't know what the difference is between that and the apparently more standard 221 (got it because it was on sale... didn't know much about buying flutes back then). But really,...

fhayashi, I don't know how long you have been playing. If you are a beginner, then be patient with the low octave. It's hard and will come with time. Right now focus on getting a steady, SLOW air stream across the flute with a relaxed, oval shaped embouchure. Keep blowing until you get a sound, then...

Nope, as long as the flute's sounding what it's supposed to sound like and you're comfortable with it! I know several people who play out of the side of their mouths. Supposedly James Galway does it too....

I don't play pic, but if any part of your concert piccolo is wooden, DO NOT MARCH WITH IT!! Wooden instruments suffer horribly in humidity and changes in weather, not to mention you will have to set it down on the grass sometimes . Clarinetists, for example, march with their old plastic clari...

Wow, mty.... I think I'm now terrified into having correct finger positions! Sometimes my hands do get sort of numb or very sore when I play for a long time or difficult passages. As I said, I have obscenely small hands, so playing flute without damaging my fingers is going to be something I really ...

Thanks! I can usually tap or play the rhythm in my head ok, but when I actually start playing the notes.... And I have a hard time registering notes, especially fast ones. I see the G-flat and I know it's a G-flat, but I can't translate it into a fingering fast enough or something like it. I end up ...
