Re-skinning pads

Post by ghostNote »

Re-skinning my pads with these latex jimmies just isn't happening; anybody help a brother out and tell me where I can find some sheepskins?

Have you tried a farm?

Seriously though, pads are NOT covered with sheepskin. You can get proper supplies for recovering pads from the J.L. Smith website. You can find them with a Google search.

What about in a pinch? Will Reynolds's/Seran clingwrap work?

Well they don't call it "clingwrap" for nothing...

Somebody else was saying pipe-thread tape can hold a flautist over until fish bladders and a visit to the tech.

You're saying the sac which contains all the viscera? Next time I order some fish, tell the cook I'd like to keep that and take home for flute maintenance?

Teflon plumber's tape can be useful for some emergency repairs. It might work OK for a trill key pad because those pads are small. However, on the other pads, most of the teflon plumber's tape is not wide enough to completely cover the pad without a seam and a seam will leak. Cling wrap is probably better to temporarily cover the larger pads. It's also good to temporarily tighten loose headjoints or footjoints.
