NYC area Repair Classes/Workshops

Hello,

Does anyone know of any workshops/classes for repadding/repair, other than the Vermont sessions? I keep thinking there must be classes/sessions somewhere in the NYC area, but I haven't found anything when I search.

I ordered the supplies for a flute I found at a thrift shop, and tried it for the fun of it. I enjoyed it, and wondered about more formal classes than YouTube.

I know. They want $1600/class, plus lodging. I just can't believe that there isn't something within the NYC metro area, especial with the various music schools.

I finally gave up, and purchased some inexpensive flutes from the thrift shop, and started taking them apart on my own, with the Phalen book as a guide. I'm waiting for the pads to come.3 Between the book and You-Tube, I expect that I'll eventually become proficient, though not as quickly as if I had taken a real class.

I've enjoyed it, but I enjoy puzzles. If one doesn't enjoy puzzles, do not even try it.

It is a link to a free dissertation about flute repair that a student wrote while pursuing his Doctor of Musical Arts degree. You can download it in PDF format and it really is pretty good. While it won't be a complete substitute for a flute repair class or apprenticeship, it provides a a brief history of the flute mechanism and a good overview of the process, tools, and supplies needed to repad a flute. It also provides resources for pads, tools, and other repair parts and supplies.
