Used Pearl not giving some notes: Fix it or me?

Post by Notian »

Just bought a Pearl student flute from a friend (who said she gave up after her 2nd lesson). I can occasionally get a non-committal bottom C out of it, and I can get a nice one if I close the pads with my inner thigh instead of my fingers (hope that's not too much information!). There are other notes (on the generic fingering chartI found) that just don't work.

Nb. This is the first flute I've owned -- several decades after I last played regularly (school band), so poor technique and idiocy are potential factors.

She said she had it serviced recently. I thought she also said she bought it new. However, I see prominent depression rings in the pads, which says to me that this baby has some miles on it.

Should I just get it serviced? If so, what should I expect to pay?

The lowest C on flute is often difficult for new or returning flutists. Don't be discouraged. It's impossible to tell you what it will cost without assessing what (if anything) is wrong with it. It might just need some adjustments or it could need to have all new pads installed. Depending on that, the cost could range from $25 - $500. I would suggest taking it to a reputable flute repair shop and getting it checked. You can ask for an estimate before committing to the work. Most shops charge $50 per hour and up.

Pearl is a reputable flute and should serve you well if it is in good playing condition. I have an old Pearl 501 that I use as a backup to my main flute.

Have a good technician look at it. Then you will know. Keep practicing....

It is impossible to say exactly how much money it will take to understand what is wrong with your flute and fix it. In any case, don't worry!
