can I clean the inside of the flute using rubbing alcohol

Post by uminds »

Hi, I just got a used flute for my daughter and would like to sanitize the inside of the flute. I wonder if I can clean it with rubbing alcohol. If that is not appropriate, what is the recommended way to sanitize the flute's interior?

Thanks

It's safe to wipe down the outside of the headjoint and body with a microfiber or similar soft cloth that has been lightly moistened with alcohol. You can do the same to the inside of the headjoint using a handkerchief-sized cloth on the cleaning rod. You can also clean the inside of the embouchure hole using a cotton swab moistened with alcohol. I don't really recommend using an alcohol moistened cloth inside the flute because it is not good to get alcohol on the pads. It will dry the pad skin covering and can lead to premature pad failure. If you wish to do it anyway, the cloth must be VERY lightly dampened with alcohol to prevent getting it on the pads.
