I am definately NOT a professional by no means. I am
playing again after not touching a flute for aprx. 15 years. I was amazed at how
much came back to me. However, I notice sometimes when I''m am practicing, but
most of the time this happens for performance time, a hissing sound or "air"
sound comes out with my notes not giving the intonation I would like is there
something I am overlooking or doing wrong here? My flute is one year old
(Armstrong 103 open hole). Any suggestions would be helpful. Let me know what
you think. THanks!

That kind of a hissing sound usually comes out if the
air looses focus and does not hit the back wall precisely for that particular
note. If everything is fine with your flute (i believe it should be OK), then
you can try practising intervals (skipping from one note to the other) and
making sure that you get the same tone quality. For example, play octaves, C2 -
C3, then D2 - D3, E2 - E3, etc, all in a row. After that, try some other
interval but listen to the quality of your tone, it will solidify each note and
later, during performance, your lips will be able to adjust automatically for
playing each note. Keep practicing and best of luck!

I was very glad to see your question. I too, am playing
the flute again after not having played for sixteen years. As you stated, a lot
of it is coming back to me, but I too have the hissing sound in the higher
register. I am also experiencing tightness in my throat at the least sign of
stress. I have tried yawning to get rid of it, but nothing is working. Tomorrow
I am auditioning for a church orchestra, and I am afraid that I will sound
awful! If there is anyone out there who can help me, please reply!!!![:((]

Just try to relax! Especially in the higher register
your lips need to be relaxed and your throat open to create a rounded and
focused sound. If you haven't performed for a while, being anxious is quite
normal. Make sure that you warm up properly before the audition and do not worry
about the performance, just think music. Practicing is the only thing you are
"responsible" for - the rest you cannot control so there is no reason to worry
about it. Good luck on your audition. We are by your side! Sincerely,

How did your audition go? Is it getting easier for you?
I'm still stumped on some things. I also can't believe I am playing again
after all these years. May I add that I am also Hard of Hearing and wear two
hearing aids so it does make it a little more difficult for me than most, but I
still perform and try to do my best. When I perform, I also try to just
concentrate on my flute, the piano and the choir and thing fall into place.

well. It is definitely getting easier for me. I am still having trouble with the
hissing sound in my higher register. My low notes sound great! I find that now I
probably should be wearing my glasses when I practice because sometimes a middle
register 'A' looks like a middle register 'C'. Currently, my biggest problem
is stage fright. Thank you so much for asking! How is your playing coming
along?[:)]
