Every time I play the flute, I get two little dimples on either side of my mouth. I've never seen any other flute player get these. Is this normal? Is it just the way my mouth is shaped?

I'm fairly new to the flute, and I don't want to get any bad habits right off the bat, so any answers would be appreciated.

Hey there flute girl.
These dimples general mean you're tensing your mouth too much when you play, try and relax your lips a little more. Dimples are an effective way to check your embouchure tension, when they show, you're too tight, when they don't, chances are you're ok

I was always taught that you do what you can to make the sound you want as relaxed as possible. The "Smiley" embouchure is generally bad practice in most cases. Try not to concentrate too much about your lip position, and the proper position will come more naturally.

This is different for every person as well. Depending on the size, shape and thickness of your lips you will have a different embouchure setup than anyone else. True, there should be some common traits in all embouchures, but each embouchure is unique. Some are perfectly symmetrical, some are not. Just loosen up. Relax, and don't stress. Just listen.
