I'm searching for a nice Piccolo!

Post by JasonTongRulz »

I've been a big fan of Pearl for quite a while so I started by looking at Pearl Piccolos.

It seems like they're really nice but apart from what has been said on their website I know absolutely nothing about them..

What are some good things about the Pearl Piccolo?

Is it a good Piccolo or are there better Piccolos?

And is the High Wave or the Traditional Straight Headjoint better?

We need a price range and its intended usage before we can really recommend anything. Other good brands are:

Powell
Haynes
Burkart
Hammig
Keefe
Yamaha
Zentner (if you can find one)
Dean Yang
Sankyo

I would read the FAQ thread on here too. It will answer a lot of your questions.

I don't really have a Price Limit - If I find a good Piccolo I'll buy it :P Oh, and I plan to be using this as my Main Piccolo and if it's good I might play on it more than my Flute!

And thank you for your suggestions!~ :D

Burkart piccolos are amazing. I find them to be very responsive.

I just a few seconds ago received my pic in the mail!! I am so excited!! I was playing on (at home only) a Bundy Prelude and just got a Yamaha YPC-62. I couldn't get above an E3 on the Bundy but right away got to an A3 on the Yamaha (it plays like warm honey butter melting on a homemade buttermilk biscuit...lol.) I have only recently started playing pic and I am performing in the Singing Christmas Tree at my local church (over 1,000+ in attendance each night during the 10 performances) and Sat night the piccolo player has a symphony concert so I asked her if she'd mind if I played pic tomorrow night and oh yeah! I am so excited I can't wait! I got this pic from ebay, I know I just heard a lot of people gasp BUT I asked a lot of questions and even friended the seller on Facebook. I really nice guy, and a flute player since the 70's. It's less than a year old and I got it for a little more than half of retail. I am so blessed and so excited.

Oh, think you flute players would like to know - I am a full time sax player but only got the job with the Singing Christmas because I signed up to play the flute for the performances and not sax - they didn't hire any sax players this year!! GO FLUTE!

Congrats on the new picc! The YPC-62 is a nice picc. I bought mine about 5 or 6 years ago when Mars Music was going out of business and got it new for a steal of a price - it was a liquidation blowout at less than wholesale cost. I'm a doubler too (Sax, flute, picc, clarinet) and the YPC-62 is a good one for doublers. Like you, I use it for Christmas programs at my church. Enjoy it!

Since it's wood, be sure to protect it from extreme temperatures. Don't leave it in your car or trunk especially during real cold weather!. If your picc gets real cold, let it warm up gradually to room temperature before playing it, otherwise you run the risk of cracking it. If the picc is real cold, when you blow your warm, moist air into the picc, the inside will expand faster than the outside and that's what can cause cracks.
