Tuning My Flute

Before I practice I always get my tuner out to make sure my flute is in tune.
Lately I have noticed when I play several notes the tuner is detecting them as being on the sharp side.
This seems to always be the case when the head is fully inserted into the body of my flute.
When I move the head slightly out from the body I get the green light from my tuner that I am in tune and the sharp light goes out.
The more I pull the head out the light on my tuner comes on as being flat.
I would like to ask if this is normal or does each flute or tuner vary slightly.
To be honest it isn't a problem but I am just curious what the norm is.

That's perfectly normal. On most flutes, you'll need to pull out the headjoint a bit to tune to A440. How much depends upon whether your flute is designed to A440 or A442. It also depends upon how much of the embouchure hole you cover with your lower lip. Also, most electronic tuners can be adjusted between A440 and A446, but the default is usually A440. Check your to see what it is set to. So, the bottom line is that there are many variables that affect how much you need to pull out. On many flutes, you may need to pull out around 1/8" to 1/4" to tune to A440.

Now that I understand the tuning aspect of the flute I better get back to
learning how to play it. lol.
