Taffanel and Gaubert "17 Grand Daily Exercises" Considered
by many THE book of advanced intermediate to professional exercises. Refered to
as a book for a lifetime for flute players. Price is prohibitive new. Starts
fairly simply if you take it at a slow pace. It is required in some testing.

In band we do a warm up called lip slurs, they call it lip
slurs, because the brass instruments lip slur it. the notes are based off of the
Bb scale. The notes are 1-5-1-5 8-5-8-5 1-5-8-5-1 in other words, Bb-F-Bb-F then
the Bb is played up an octave down to the F. Sorry if that's hard to
understand, it's kinda hard to explain.
---------------- On 8/31/2003 2:17:13 PM hey do u
guys have any good warm-up exersizes that could improve my playing?
----------------
For warm-up excersizes, I suggest (you begin) with
long tones. Just start with the Bb and, with a tuner in front of you, just play
the note out as long as you can sustain it on any level of forte. BENEFITS: (i)
You tune the note/your instrument (ii) your lips get warmed up (iii) you develop
and remember correct pitch that you can use when you're without a tuner ie.,
being able to find correct pitch/tune without the need of a tuner (iv) helps
improve your breath support (v) develops tone. If you are willing to spend the
time, do it with all the notes. After long tones, you can move to scales. Adding
tetrachords is a must, as it develops hand movement and warms your hand up so
that when you play fast run/songs, your fingers aren't slow making the notes
uneven, etc. Sites on effective practice routines:
[http://gemeinhardt.com/how/practice.html] - daily routine written by Richard
Hahn [http://music2master.com/lessons29.html] - very indepth information on
different types of practicing I hope those links help out, and I suggest you
print them out, as well. :) Good luck on your flute playing!
