--I practice whenever? Very informative I think
most people that practice for 4 hours probably waste 2 hours and are counter
productive because they just repeat mistakes for another hour. Flautist is from
the Italian Flaut since we dont use the Italian word Flaut, we use Flute,
Flutist is correct in English speaking countries and Flautist though still in
use, is incorrect. Spread the word to the uninformed. We are Flutists not
Flautists because we play the Flute not the Flaut. Unless your Italian of
course

For the flutist/flautist debate, a little joke:
Street Musician: 'What is the difference between a flutist and a flautist?'
Famous Musician: 'I don't know.' Street Musician: '$50 a week, man.'

....and for my practice time. On Tuesdays I have
both my private lesson (30 min) and my city's Youth Band (1 hr.) and then I
usually practice what my teacher told me to work on once I get home, so I have
about 2 hrs that day. And on Sundays I have flute choir for an hour and a half,
and I practice before I go to that, so that's about 2 hours as well. On the
days with no outlined, pre-determined times, I generally practice 30 min.-1.5
hrs. but sometimes I'm busy with homework or something and I only get in 15 or
20. I like playing, so it helps with the practicing [;)] When I practice, I do
stuff in my lesson book first, going from scales and arpeggios to finger and
tongue exercises, to duets, to ornament exercises. Then I practice my solo and
flute choir and band pieces.

Are you enjoying it more now that you are
practicing less?

Sometimes it gets to be work and I back off on
practice time. Not that I practice much anyway. Practice is important for my
girlfreind, I kind of take it as it comes. 20 minutes of good practice time goes
a long way.

teacher has given me to study.I can't really do any more than that as I have
three children to keep happy!!![]

NO respected teacher anywhere would recommend 6
hours of practice. If it works for this young man that is his situtation. The
current accepted practice routine is 3-5 20 minute sessions for MS and HS
students adding a couple sessions as you mature. Studies have proven reduced
productivity with longer or more sessions. In other words you work more an get
less out of it. If you can not accomplish what you need in those sessions in a
total time of less than 3 hours you really need to seek out a professional to
guide you. A professional can show you how to properly practice and use your
time productively. More is not always better. Read what the professionals
suggest. None of them recommend exceeding 3 hours. And even 3 hours is for a
college music major or a professional preparing a new piece with a concert
coming up. For a MS student 3 quality sessions of 20 min will accomplish
everything you need if done well. 6 hrs is absurd

I have heard reports contrary to that...I know
music majors who are required to practice for AT LEAST six hours each day. I
used to practice for six hours a day. I certainly would, if I had more time on
my hands...I practice for 3 hours a day per recommendation by my flute teacher
(who indeed does know her stuff). I think that if you have the time to practice
for 6ish hours a day, that's great!
Haha, this one is my favorite:

I've always stood by my band teacher's rule,
"Rest as much as you play". So if i play for 4 hours, i rest for 4 hours. But
most of the time, i practice 45-120 minutes at home (depending on homework). I
get at least an extra half hour a day to practice at school everyday at lunch,
and there's the band rehearsals. Usually, I do a lot of tuning and long tones,
and scale work sometimes. I dont have anyone to practice the duets with, but my
parakeet tries to imitate my tone a lot.

I practice generally about 1-3 hours a day. not
every day however. I like to think that 5 out 7 days is perfect, usually
splitting up the days off. sometimes I take what I call flute vacations, where I
don't touch the instrument for a week. I highly recommend this. Most of the
time I play better after a week's rest from the instrument. I think that a half
hour to an hour for high school students is enough. If you major on the
instrument in college you should definitely increase your personal practice
time. I would stay away from including any performance classes with your
personal practice time. but you should practice any material that gives you a
challenge from those classes. Going, back to Willi139's comment, band
rehearsals are not practicing. Most musicians that play in "bands" don't really
look to improve their "chops". Playing three chord songs with a simple melody
doesn't need much technical achievement. but writing good songs is a gift that
you are born with. I think Willi139 that you are confused about the meaning of
the topic. Most of these students of the flute look to get better at playing the
flute, not joining an Indy Rock band. If the friend of yours who quite trumpet
would have told you to take a hike and that he would have rather played the
trumpet, what would you have said to him then? Also I think it is great that
these mothers of flutists involve themselves with their childrens playing,
however I would like to hear more from them in this forum. Now about methods of
practicing? I have quite a few of those. i could write a book on it. some of
them I invented myself. Most of you students have teachers and you should
definitely practice partially on what lessons they give you, that is if you like
the material they give you. but don't just stick to their plan, find some other
things to play out there. Look around. but for practical purposes on this
particular forum I will offer up one of my practice methods that I do 9 out of
10 practice periods. This is of course scales, but not just major and minor. I
practice the mode systems. What I do is I will pick a "key of the day" and write
down which one I did on what day so I don't repeat one key too much. I then
play the major version of the scale followed by all the modes superimposed from
that scale, this of course includes the minor or should I say Aeolian. Every
time I change modes I also change the articulation and or rythmn of that mode.
you know like tongue two slur two or triplets or swing the notes. I also do
thirds and arpeggios on these modes. After that I then pick a certain mode and
try to create a mini song out of that particular scale, using pentatonc versions
of that mode. Let say I am in the key of C. I have decided to use the mode
superimposed from c starting of F. that leaves me FGABCDE. i must create a
melody in the key of F that does not have a B flat. In other words I must create
a melody in the key of C that resolves on F. In some cases I will bring in a
sharp or a flat or more into the picture that isn't related to the key at all.
Like let say F G A flat b c d e. now things are beginning to sound a little
interesting. I then try to create melodies on that particluar scale or practic
thirds on the key I just made up. above all else I am not reading these scales
from a book, but I am only using my ear to guide me. This method is for the
enhancement ot improvisation. I do not reccoment this method for everyone only
those interested in improvisation. but it can help your technique as well as
your ear at the same time

<<Also I think it is great that these mothers of

mothers". My daughter used to read and post here...she has a member name. There
is a reason she stopped posting here that I won't go into. I started posting
when I picked up the flute again after many years but will occasionally post a
question that my daughter has or can answer questions from my daughters
experience in response to a question. I was wondering why you would like to hear
more from her? Kim
