Quena practice

Post by Ayaruje »

Hi! Im new here. Hopefully i put this in the right place. Ive been practicing quena for about a month or two (3?) and im okay with the first octave and just now learning the second octave. Im also learning (slowly) to read music. Ive been playing music for a 20 years (guitar, ukulele, harmonica) and in the last year native amercian style flute and now quena.

Ive figured out mary had a little lamb, happy bday, amazing grace and iron man. But i have failed completely to find a resource for songs to play.

Maybe sheet music can help? Does it need to be specifically made for quena? Piano notes do t always work for me because i dont know which octave a note should be in.

My quena is in g (gabcdefg). How can I learn new songs? I'm only just now getting into music theory so I don't know much.

I appreciate any advice.

Unfortunately, most of the members of this forum are focused on concert flutes. There are not many members her who play any of the ethnic flutes. I'm not familiar with any resources for the quena. I'd suggest a Google search. Perhaps there is a forum or a Facebook group for the quena.

Thanks that's a good idea. Are their any open hooked Western transverse flutes?

There are a few makers who make open holed transverse bamboo flutes. Eric the Flutemaker is one that comes to mind. He makes a wide variety of ethnic bamboo flutes and other bamboo instruments. He makes both transverse and end-blown vertical flutes including quena, Shakuhachi, penny whistles, and many more. It's hard to find a bigger variety in one place!
