What a role model Carey was for all working people, that is if they want a state funded three hots and a cot behind the walls.

Flutes in Jazz

Granted that today, jazz ensembles are usually scored for 4-5 (each) saxes, trumpets, trombones, and rhythm. That however does not mean that other instruments should be ignored in jazz ensembles. To do so is at best ignorance and at worst bigotry.Griffith wrote:My band director hates clarinets, even as a "novelty" double...
Yeah. I'll try that. He probably won't eat me, but I guess I'm just scared of what he'll do to me if I question that. My band director is the kind that acknowledges those "novelty" instruments, the ones not usually scored for, and lets them place, but I don't think he really appreciates them? He is a really good band director otherwise, but I dunno.
I will definitely try that though, so thanks for that. I have heard of Benny Goodman...not that he was a clair, though. That's very interesting.
"I'M NOT A FLAUTIST. I HAVE NEVER IN MY LIFE PLAYED A FLAUT. SO I AM *BLEEPIN'* FLUTIST AND NOT SOME BRIT!!"

...."Just a little."

Good luck!
My aspirations have shifted to playing jazz and salsa flute, but damn i need more practice.
Started hourly lesson again after a long break, Luv it though!

High school jazz bands will rarely, if ever, see a flute part in the music. Depending on who is directing, of course, may be very old school in where he/she will want the typical jazz band (saxes, trumpets, trombone, bass, guitar, drum kit, piano, vibes), and other band directors, typically younger ones, will be more willing to have one or two songs that include a flute. The same thing goes for a clarinet and other instruments as well.
The thing to remember is, is that there is always room to learn another instrument of which you could play for the jazz band.
For example, I play the piccolo, flute, soprano through bari sax, piano, keyboard percussion, and trumpet. Learning instruments isn't hard, but taking time to learn them well may take a while. Just remember that when you learned your first instrument, it may have been harder because you were not familiar with music notation and such.

great jazz flutists
Hi, sounds like your band teacher hasnt listened to much jazz flutists. There are tons: download a couple from the net like Matt Eakle, Holly Hoffman, Bud Shank, Roland Kirk, Hubert Laws.... the list goes on.
Flute reads anything in C. In other words, you can take any fake book, any tune and play it on the flute. In jazz band flutists can use the book the piano uses, play the melody or root notes of the chords. I adore jazz flute!
