New flute oddities...

Post by AlvinY »

Good day everyone!
I'm curious, I got a Pearl 525 a few days back, and have been practicing only on it. But today I tried my 2SP, and oddly enough I could hit low C quite consistently - I've always had a difficulty with low C. I think the 525 is marketed as a step up flute - would such flutes be more difficult to play on?

One other thing I noticed after playing these two flutes, is that the pearl has more volume/range (i use earplugs now!). Some practice pieces with a soft->loud portion are now much easier to blow. I also prefer the sound of the pearl.

Guess I'll continue to work harder for the lower notes....

Generally, as you move up the flute hierarchy, they do become more difficult to play well, but they also have new musical options available. This is because most base level student instruments have headjoints that are cut to allow an slightly unfocused airstream, or less-than-perfect embouchure formation while still producing a decent sound. Once you are ready for an upper level flute, generally the head is cut to require better control of the airstream, as you should have developed your embouchure to the point that you don't need as much forgiveness built in. Whether or not that Pearl is actually harder for YOU to play is a different story. Whatever the case, it's great that you've managed to improve your low register and dynamic range! Congratulations on that!

Hello mate! Thanks for the advice. I was thinking something was up with the flute or not - I was thinking of perhaps returning it and either staying with the 2SP or getting a Yamaha 221. I think I will be keeping it and just work on it. Thanks!
