Do you practice sitting or standing?

Post by asoalin »

If you sit, what do you sit on? A barstool? Dining room chair? Your bed? Something else?

I practice standing. However, if you choose to practice sitting, find a flat, level chair to sit on that's at the right height to allow your feet to hit the floor normally. This eliminates barstools and beds from the equation. A dining room chair would be a good choice, but personally, I think that standing yields better results (plus it's how you'll have to perform if you ever solo, so it's good to get used to it).

I sometimes sit, it depends on how long I'm practicing for. I generally start out standing and then sit towards the end. But when I do sit, I always sit on the edge of the seat and never slouch. So I don't lose my support or air intake ability.

I encourage students to do both because most of my current students play in band as well. Doing both allows them to become better performers both as soloists and as ensemble players. Eliminating one tends to hinder students, especially younger students, from accomplishing a good sound and posture in both situations.

i always sit when i practise. it lets me save/use more energy on playing that way, rather than standing. (i know most ppl dont even need to think about that - but lucky me i do![not])

im always on a flat chair though

Standing. But, if I am really tired, I will sit in a flat, straight-back chair.

Claiken,

Something just hit me re your past audition experiencs. When you audition, do you stand or sit? I ask because if you do most of your practicing sitting and you are standing at your auditions, there may be a connection and a way to imporve your auditions. It seems like there is very little difference when in truth, it can make a big difference. Just a thought.

Claiken,

I am really thinking from the nervous standpoint. There is quite a bit of physical difference when you play sitting vs standing, but depending on the player, that may or may not make a difference i sound. However, if you tend to do one more than the other, you may not be as comfortable standing. Add that to nerves, it could potentially be an issue.

I agree. I always practice standing, as I feel it is much easier to breathe fully and deeply than when sitting.
Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

There was a famous (older) trombone player when asked this question responded, " Stand when your young and then sit when your old." I can still laugh at this response.
"The pianos don't have to be tuned exactly at A440, just don't be flat".

I think if you sit with good posture it would be okay to practice sitting...

But I think standing is better because you end up standing for auditions and solo performances anyways.

I can play sitting on my bed, standing, sitting on a chair but I am most comfortable standing while I play.
