Is it the flute, or is it just me?

Post by nmglover »

I haven't been able to play flute for a good month or so due to a tonsillectomy I had, and therefore my tone has naturally faltered and that break really killed my sound.

As a nice Christmas gift, I got a nice 1952 Haynes flute. It finally arrived today and I tried it out - it sounded terrible, difficult to blow and produce a continuous, strong sound. Is this likely because of my extended break from playing, or did I just happen to buy a poor Haynes? I really hope it is not the latter. What do you guys think? Also, should I take it in to get it inspected/get an estimate on it?

You are probably having issues with getting use to the headjoint. Just keep playing on it. You will eventually get use to it.

If the flute you've got is used, maybe that's the case of sending it to a good tech to a general revision.
Perhaps things become eaiser then.

It could be that the flute keys need tuning. This happened to my flute once,
and when I blew into it, it produced an awful, continuous sound. Your local
music shop can easily fix this problem for you. I hope this helps - but don't
give up :) !!!
