1/8th note question

Post by Crazy »

As I've stated before I've been playing for less
than 2 months--never before picked up a flute or any other instrument. I've
been doing pretty good so far. I've learned to read music and I'm not having
any difficulty with the notes so far. But I am having lots of trouble figuring
out how to play 1/8 notes. With help from my 12 year old son who plays
percussion, I can now play 1/8 notes as long as they are all the same note. The
problem lies when the notes change. Does anyone have any suggestion to help me?
I seem to be getting closer but any help would be greatly appreciated and tried.
I've been practicing for hours...

I would suggest not looking for short cuts and have
patience. Practice is the simple answer to your question and most questions of
its nature. No special elixer replaces it. Simple solution is to practice your
scales. Play them over and over try and speed up as much as you can without
losing good tone or mistakes. At least 20 minutes a day and you problem with 1/8
notes will be gone in a few weeks. Thats my two cents. Now let the real experts
give you a knowledgable opinion.

Thank you. Penny, for the response. In my heart I
knew the answer would be practice and my instructor has been telling me to be
patient, also. I'll keep practicing but I hadn't thought about practicing the
scales increasing the speed. I'll try it. Thanks.[]

Penny, I want to thank you for the advice of just
practicing the scales over & over and speeding up every time. It worked! I've
been practicing all day and I just played my first song (and it sounded right)
with 1/8th notes and 1/8 notes that change. I'm not very patient (I think it's
because I've wanted to play for so long) but the practicing helped.
[] Thank you.

Do you have a metronome? I use my metronome all the
time, it is extremely useful.
Cheers,

to my instructor she told me not to us it now. She's trying real hard to get me
to keep time with my foot but then my fingers won't move right. lol I'm really
not doing bad for playing less than 2 months with no musical experience what so
ever. Trying to be patient & practicing lots. []

it sounds like you are having problems getting the
notes to come out in rythmn quickly... try to slow it down and slow as it take
to get it right.... or even try funky rythems.... like long note short note long
note short note.. and then put it back in the correct rythmn.........that will
allow you to teach your brain and you will get the piece to work for you... just
say if you have any questions... hope that helped [;)]

No wonder they kicked that Penny out of this place.
They sell lessons here and her posts fixed problems and cost them bucks. The
rest of these people just post endlessly and say nothing helpful. Primarily a
gab session for "older" people.
