I don't really know
if that's actually how vibrato works... it may be, but it's not something
conscious anyway. When I play vibrato, I don't think about my diaphram at all.
I guess it's more like slight variations in the tone/speed/airstream of the
note. I think of vibrato sort of like this: if a note is a horizontal line, then
vibrato on that note is a wave going up and down across that line. Does that
make sense? It can sometimes help to take a metronome and practice "waves" for
slow, steady beats (like on a scale), and then speeding up the metronome. You
can create the vibrato by making "pulses" on the note. I guess you're using
more air for each "pulse." Hope that helps, I know vibrato is difficult to
explain how to do it.

how exactly do u push ur diaphram to paly vibrato?
I don't like
vibrato so I don't do it. Reminds me of the oops almost used the word I can't,
ladies singing. But I wanted to know what the heck a diaghram was. So I asked my
girlfriends mom she is a internal doctor. She was thinking we wanted birth
control advice and almost freaked. After we explained she said it moved up and
in when you breath out and down and out when you breath in. She said it was like
reflex thing you can't control it so you can't push with it. But she doesn't
know about vibrato.

Vibrato is such a
hard thing to explain how to do. There is a lot of controversy on exactly what
part of or combinations of the body are used. I would recommend buying the
Trevor Wye Book 4 on Intonation and Vibrato book. This book will help you in not
just learning "how" to play with vibrato but also how to control it. Also listen
to many different flute players and how they play with vibrato you can also
learn a lot that way also. Kim

Ive only been
playing for 6 days but I really dont think that the diaphram is what makes the
vibrato "I could be wrong" As a speech pathlogist I would say that when playing
were controling the stream of air with our lips and diaphram mostly lips in
upper register. When I play vibrato I shake the flute, this comes natural
because of playing guitar, I tried to it with my breath and was dumbfounded.

Shaking the flute
produces a great effect (I do use it sometimes), but it is not really the way to
create vibrato in a traditional sense. Vibrato on the flute is created the same
way as if you were singing. Most importantly, you need to be relaxed and you
create this pulsations of air by pushing from your diaphragm/throat (faster
vibratos are a combination of these). It is a very personal effect and it has
caused some controversy. Please check out this topic:
http://www.fluteland.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=391 It will give you some
useful info. To Bill, I remember when I was starting with the flute, I would
love to just play with it and discover these new sounds and new ways of playing
it, similar to what you are doing. I still have fun doing this - it is what
makes it ever interesting to play.

I have absolutely no
idea how I learned to play vibrato. I just listened to this one girl who used to
go to my school (plays the trumpet) play, and that's how I learned what it was.
And then afterwards, I just started doing it. I really don't know how. lol I'm
sorry this doesn't help at all.

The diaphragm is a
membrane of muscle below your lungs and above your stomach. It is not true that
you cannot control it.. the diaphragm is vital for breathing, you do not have
muscles in your lungs, only in between your ribs, and this is not strong enough
to make your lungs inflate. The diaphragm is like a dome above yor stomach. When
you inhale, the diaphragm 'flattens', leaving a cavity (vacuum) which causes
your lungs to expand and take in air. Diaphragm is also used for vomiting and
coughing. Maybe the best way to feel your diaphragm muscle, is to take a deep
breath and exhale for as long as you can. eventually you will be able to exhale
no more. At this point you can feel a slight pain as your diaphragm muscle is
unable to relax any further. Maybe its just me, but I think often you cant
control a muscle voluntarily until you can 'feel' it, and know its place in
your body and this your mind Anyway, its this muscle which plays an important
part in vibrato. Hope this is helpful.

When using vibrato,
think of Spongebob. I knew this may sound stupid, but think of the way he
laughs. This is how i learned to use it. Start with "tah", then say "tah ha"
then "tah ha ha" and so on, this helps you feel where the virbato is comming
from. Good Luck ~AJ

Hahahaha...sponge
bob...that's exactly what I do! I made a post about this a while ago, and
somebody gave me good advice about pushing the diaphram. Think of something
funny and sorta laugh while playing and the air will come out in shaky waves.
I'm not sure if the throat is involved or if anything else is, but my vibrato
is still shaky when i use my diaphram. The hardest part is probably control.
