Playing Outside

What is the coldest temperature that a flute can take
and still be playable? What about dewpoint (the amount of moisture in the air)?
What is the highest dewpoint that is advisable? Every year at my church, I play
outside at the Sunrise Service on Easter Sunday. I recently purchased my new
flute, and I don''t want to mess it up by playing outside when it is too cold
or perhaps the dewpoint is too high? Any suggestions are appreciated!

I don't think anything should happen to it if you keep
it in the case before and after playing, and you warm it up before your concert.
I am not sure in what kind of weather you live in, but the dewpoint shouldn't
be a problem either. In any case, warm it up before playing, because otherwise
it sounds flat and the sound is not very rich. I hope this helps.

make sure your flute is dry before you put it away; wet
keys can damage your pads.. and pad replacement is very expensive.

True dat! Make sure you clean your flute out well and
dry it before putting it away, one time won't do too much damage, but if
there's to much stuff in there things will grow...it would be soooooooo nasty!!
But your flute is new, that's good and have fun, sounds like a cool thing to

I don't think temperature or anyhitng will affect it.
I had the lovely pleasure this year in marhcing in a Christmas parade and it was
so cold that my spit that was coming out the bottom of it froze into
icicles..and it all still worked fine. Have fun playing Sunday![:p]

oh but it does.. for our band festival, they made us
wait outside for 10 mins and it was freezing. our pitch got really screwed up
because of that, cause we didn't have enough time to warm up again.

I think I find the breezes and wind the biggest problem
outside! It plays my flute for me!!!! Not Good!! Becky xXxXx
