forever for piccolo off the internet. little did i no it was a grade 4 and this
is only my second year of playing. i can almost get the beginning perfectly but
the end part is really hard for me expecially since its so high. any suggestions
on what i can do to figure out how to play this song? also if i tryed practicing
the end an octive lower just until i get the hang of the rythmn would that be a
good idea?

I totally understand about the ending to that
song. We're playing that in our Spring concert and I was looking over the
piccolo part and it looks tough..I think working on it in the lower octave is
okay but i know for me it is sometimes harder to take it up the octave after i
learned it down..especially with different fingerings. The reason why it's
harder on the piccolo nowadays too my director said was because it was made for
a Db piccolo..hehe that might explain some things. Just take it slow and you'll
eventually get it..good luck![:)]

Hi there, I played this song memorized last
year for a spring concert with 3 other piccolos. I remember how tough it was.
Try playing through it really slowly, I mean absurdly slow and then work it up.
It's best to learn it right from the start. Maybe alternate fingerings might
help. Honestly I think the D-flat picc. part is harder than the c picc. part.
Don't get stressed, I remember it took some time for me to get it. Best of
luck![]

We're playing stars and stripes in our
spring concert, and there are three of us playing the piccolo part. I agree it
is hard. At first we all kinda just laughed and said "yeah, right." But I've
been practicing it alot lately, and it's surprisingly getting easier. Just take
it slow and work up. You'll be surprised at how much easier it will get
eventually. [:)] ~Laur~

I agree that you should learn it slowly, and
as my teacher would say, practice it with the metronome starting VERY VERY
slowly, play it perfectly five times, and then move it up a notch. It sounds
very time consuming, but I have found that implementing that into all of my
pieces it actually takes less time because you're learning it perfectly which
means you won't have to go back and fix mistakes later. Also, your muscles
develop a "memory" and will play it correctly, sometimes I can feel my fingers
just naturally doing the right thing. You'll find Stars and Stripes the rest of
your life wherever you play though, so it will be very rewarding learning it. I
played it in my youth orchestra for tour, and all six of us in the flute section
played piccolo on the solo (and were told that it's tradition to stand up
during the solo, so that's what we did!) It's fun, and also makes for a great
warm up!! Good luck, remember practice slowly!!

We stood up too. Nice to know we weren't the
only ones![:)]

Can you tell me which website you used to buy
the piccolo music for Stars and Stripes? I'm looking for it and was hoping to
find a site that will deliver it quickly or better yet let you download the
music. Thanks, Gerry G
