When I play the flute, my left index finger starts hurting.
I've heard that its because I'm not practicing enough and I've heard that its
because I'm to tense. Does anyone have any advice as how to relax while I'm
playing? Or why its hurting? Thanx!

I had a problem in my right hand with my pinky, do you find
that you are extending your finger to reach the key, if so, it may be the way
you are holding your flute. Also remember, just like any other part of your
body, you need to warm up your fingers too, if you run through some scales
before you play your ability to play (particually in quick sections) will be
better. If you have a flute teacher maybe you should get them to watch you play
to see if you are holding the flute correctly, bye!

Hi! Actually, the finger that starts hurting is the index
finger that I rest the flute on (or hold it up with. You know). Thanx for
replying! It helps a bunch!

maybe you are depending to much on just that finger to
support your flute, instead of trying to hold the weight of the flute with it,
why don't just just try resting it in that area and make sure that your right
hand thumb is also supporting that end of the flute. Also, try putting your hand
on a wall, with your wrist area at 90 degrees, and while keeping your fingers
straight, lift them up, individually and see how long u can sustain that for, it
will strengthen your fingers but make sure u dont leave it too long that u
injure yourself, bye!

oh, i know what you're talking about with the hurting
index finger (that holds the flute) Mine used to do that when i first started
playing. first, because it is in an awkward bent postion, and moving up and down
constantly it tires out. plus, theres a vein that runs through your finger and
if it's close to the surface the bloode gets cut off (like what happended to
me) i found that balling your hand up in a fist for 10 counts then stretching
them out for 10 counts a few repititons, when my hands get tired, usually does
the trick to loosen up the muscles (plus it just feels good after playing for
hours) after a while, your hands should get stronger.
