Hi~ I am back new to the flute after and my
daughter plays the flute also. Neither of us have heard of tounging on your
bottom lip. Is this a special technique? If so I would be interested in hearing
about it. I have heard of tounging on the roof of your mouth or touching at the
top of your front teeth or sometimes in between your lips . Wish I could be of
more help..maybe someone will have some ideas for you and we can both learn
something new today :) Kim

hi[:)] yes i learned from my private teacher
that your tongue should be on the bottom lip & never behind the teeth.sometimes
you should stick the tongue through the lips, but genrally its on the bottm
lip[::)] .i have heard about tongunig at the top of the teeth or lip (for short
notes) or at the bottom(for long notes) & etc. but i think those are mostly told
to beginners...?im not sure though.[:)]

Hmmm...that is a new technique to me and to
my daughter. I don't see how that you could stop the air. I can't do it on my
flute but then I would be classified as a beginner. My daughter is not a
beginner.... buzzing, chirping, key clicking and flexing are just a few things
that her teacher has worked with her on but tounging on her bottom lip has never
been done. I will try to remember to have her ask her teacher this week and I
will have her try to do it tonight when she practices. I am hoping that someone
else here has used this technique so they can tell us how they do it :) Kim

That maybe French tonguing where your tongue
goes through your lips.<g> To the best of my knowledge and I quickly checked
with books and daughter tounguing single, double and triple are practiced with
different sounds (t k g d) and none of them require the tongue to pass the
teeth. I would seek clarification from your teacher. Maybe the very specialized
sounds like referred to here from Larry Krantz pages: Tongue Pizzicato
(Percussive tonguing)…………… A sort of percussive "pop" that is done using the
tongue and the lips. Make your lips very firm, stick your tongue out through
them, then pull it back in rapidly. As the air rushes in to the mouth you get a
little popping sound. When you do this with a flute in playing position, the
flute will actually amplify it, and give it pitch. If you then, play a note, and
put this effect in front of the note, you get this effect.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tongue Stops (Tongue thrusts)………… A resonant "thump" that is produced by
covering the embouchure hole completely with the lips, and then pushing the
tongue forward, through the lips and into the embouchure hole You use the normal
low register fingerings for his. High register fingerings will not work, since
this effect only amplifies the bottom harmonic (which is not used in the high
register).

I agree, that sounds a little fishy about
the tongue being on the bottom lip or through the lips. In fact, the tongue
should never be touching the lips when you're playing a note. It slightly
touches the back of the teeth at the beginning of the note, but will then fall
back into the mouth. I wouldn't stress yourself out about trying to get your
tongue on your bottom lip. As for the embouchure, it is a life-long process! It
is THE most important aspect of flute playing and the most difficult to perfect.
You will probably always be trying to improve it.
Cheers,
Emily
