sterling silver foot joint?

Post by flutist76 »

Can anyone help me? I recently bought an Armstrong 800B flute online. This particular model is sterling silver head, body, and foot. Only the head joint and body are engraved sterling silver. I took it to a local music store and a salesman compared mine to a new 800B he had. Everything was identical, except the foot joint on his said "sterling silver". He measured the wall and sure enough the foot joint was thin wall(thin wall model flute). He also showed me screws on the pads which were larger than what is on a silver plated foot joint. He seemed fairly confident it is sterling silver and thought it was unusual it wasn't engraved.(The flute he compared with mine was the same vintage. His serial# 727XXXX. My serial# 728XXXX.)

Can anyone tell me how to determine whether this foot joint is sterling silver? Is there some sort of home test I can perform? Any replies are greatly appreciated.
