I use a clip on mic that plugs into an amp. I just
clip it on to my foot joint and it works great. I would recommend a wireless mic
to give you more freedom of movement. good luck, matt

I played the other night and they just put a mic on
a stand near the end of my flute and it worked fine :)

With a brass instrument I could understand the
effectiveness on of mic (though they don't need it) but on a woodwind? How can
you target the sound to make it louder if it's coming from all over the
instrument. Infact, most of the sound from woodwinds DOESN'T come from the
bell.

There are occasions when it's necessary to mic any
instrument whether it's brass, woodwind, percussion, or even an electric
guitar's amplifier. The flute's sound is mostly coming out of the hole that
you're blowing across (some sound from other areas, too). So, when recording
engineers set up the studio to record a flute, they'll generally point the
mic(s) towards the headjoint. I've been finding a lot of great information
about microphones and pickups that are designed specifically for the flute.
Looks as though one of the better known mic/preamp combinations is the Barcus
Berry 6100 Electret mic with the Barcus Berry 3000A preamp. If anyone is
familiar with this rig (or any other), I'd appreciate hearing your impressions
or experience with it. Thanks! -Fekhten

A suggestion that I have been toying with is
something like an "N-sync" type head piece that boy bands or pop solists use on
stage. It would have to have a longer wire between your ear and the mic, but if
you hook that under the flute's headjoint ans set it out near the front of the
lip plate, it may pick up better, and it wouldn't scratch your instrument. Has
anyone tried this?
