Does anyone have any suggestions of a good solo
for me to perform for this year''s OMEA solo and ensemble contest? It would
need to be a class A or B solo. Your help is much appreciated!! Aaren S.

Well, I don't know what sort of level you're
at (I don't know what a Class A solo is, sorry- we don't have them where I
live- is it very good?) but Debussy's Syrinx never fails... the audience love
it, apparently [:)] There's a lot of scope for it as well, oportunities for
variation in tone colour, dynamic contrast- lots of technical showing-off
potential! Great fun to play... Or, of course, something fast and flashy, like a
Baroque concerto... always fun...

as long as i have music, as long as there''s a song for me to sing, i can find
my way, i can see a brighter day, the music in my life will set my spirit

I'm not sure exactly of your grading, but maybe
you would like to consider Quantz's Concerto in G major, or Mozart's Concerto
in D major. I played Syrinx for an audition recently. There are technical parts
in it, but good tone is also very important for it, as it is in all pieces.
There are loads of good pieces, but I don't have time to name them all at the
moment, I'll try get back to you :)

Suite Modale by Bloch is a good choice, too.
Level 5 or so. I have been playing it for a few years now. All the movements are
fun, and the fourth one has reiterations of all the previous themes and would be
a good choice.

here are a few pieces that tend to be
crowd-pleasers: fantasie (faure), sonate for flute and piano (poulenc), concerto
in G major (mozart) the following are my personal favorites, but they are harder
for an audience that is not made up of flautists to relate to: sonate for flute
and piano (hindemith) fantasie pastorale hongroise (doppler) hth. good luck.

You should looking to buying "Flute Music by
French Composers" - Edited by Lousi Moyse. This book has many great solo's from
Chaminade, Enesco, Faure, and a few others. The Chaminade piece: Concertino is a
wonderful piece for compitions or auditions. Jess Clark
