I get so tense I sound bad... please help

Post by ShortButSweet »

I'm playing Taktakishvilli's Sonata in C, the first movement. I've noticed lately that the high notes are becoming harder and harder to play with a good, warm tone. I think it's because when I play them, I get very tense in my neck and throat. How can I help this? I need to concentrate my air stream but when I do my throat and neck tense up, and as a result, my fingers and whole body do too. Any tips for how to relax?

I have read this in a couple of places, heard in in masterclasses, and tried it...seems crazy, but try it:
Practice on a pilates ball and/or squat on your high notes. It engages your core muscles and release tension in the neck and back.
