Is this a good school?
I recently went on vacation to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and I fell in love with the campus. I haven't talked to the flute professor yet, but I plan to as soon as I can. He is a Miyazawa artist, and he sounds fantastic in their audio. Is it a good school to go to, or should I be looking somewhere else? I'm a senior now, and thinking about getting my associates beforehand. Is there any other school i should look at? I live in Florida, but I have family in Indiana and North Carolina as well.
Life is like a musical instrument...
What you get out of it,
Depends on how you play it.

If you are in Florida, you might want to look at Florida State University College of Music in Tallahassee. The flute professor is Eva Amsler. Great school, and it would be in-state for you.

What do you want to major in? What do you want to do (career wise) with your life?
Two important questions to ask before deciding...

Performance. I want to teach privately, and hopefully join a bigger orchestra. My flute teacher now always talks about how she wishes things would have worked out different for her, so I want to make her proud. And I love performing.JButky wrote:What do you want to major in? Well, I'm not a big fan or performance degrees. If you can play, people will hire you. A lot of orchestra jobs are not enough that you can play, but that you are in with the right people. (there's politics in everything).AurokeFlute wrote:Performance. I want to teach privately, and hopefully join a bigger orchestra. My college tried to convince me to double major and get a performance degree back when. I saw no use for it as I was already playing with 2 orchestras and an opera company. I never needed that degree. They don't ask you for your performance degree when you audition, they ask you after!
That being said, Having a good teacher for you is the key. If you are going to do this, some will say that there are certain prestigious schools that you must attend. (that's most;y for the political purposes to open doors) If you want to become a great player, work hard and find a teacher that will help develop you the most. (which may be more than one).
I learned a lot about the flute from many great flutists. Besides absorbing musicality, my best teachers on musicianship included a bassoonist, pianist and an organist.
So be very selective on who your primary instrument teacher will be. Choose wisely young padawan!

Yes. UNC of the Arts is a very good school for a flute performance major. Tadeau Coelho is a wonderful flutist and professor. I've heard MANY good things about him. I have a friend who is wonderful flutist at UNC of the Arts. I've also had several friends who had masterclasses Tadeau. I've heard only positive things about him.

I'm a NCSA graduate (on oboe though), but have worked with Coelho many times through chamber music coachings, and of course, had many friends in the flute studio. He's a great teacher, tough, but great. He's the perfect teacher to whip you into shape. His regimen can be a little hard at times, but if you can survive it, you'll be ready for the real world, and any other teacher you come across. I believe he gives some good advise on teaching as well. A colleague of mine studied with him and the former teacher, and has used a lot of both of their teaching methods. If you want, fell free to email me. I can possibly get you in touch with some former students and they can give you a good idea of his teaching. One is teaching in Florida now I believe, but I can't think of where exactly.
Good luck!
Good luck!
