Help with Tone understanding for auditions.

Post by Yhb40 »

Hi,

I am a high schooler, sophomore year, and I live in texas, and in about 3-4 months, i will be auditioning for TMEA All-State, and I've always had this pondering question. My private lesson teacher says, for auditions, you need to have a warm tone. I really like the James Galway tone, the edgy sound. I was wondering if i could just have some insight on what most judges will look for, because i'm really debating between both of these sounds, what my private lesson teacher is saying and what i like.

Thanks!

i think what your private teacher is talking about by warm tone is a versatile tone.. a "edgy" tone that galway has is very good for solos stuff and if you want that tone. But i dont think its AS versatile of a tone as a warmer tone. i wouldnt suggest trying for a tone like galway unless you have perfected it. Im sure your private teacher knows you well and knows the audition "wants" for your area so listen to her, your paying them for a reason!
