Either way, both are going to happen eventually. So, I have been playing flute for 11 years. Of those 11 years, I have previously owned two flutes: both beginner Gemeinhardts (First one was shut in the car door, dont ask, I literally cried when it happened!! Luckily it was a rental and the shop just let us continue our payment plan). I have had the same one for 7 years and its showing some signs of being old. Plus, I think its time to graduate from my beginner flute. What are the best flutes for someone who plays regularly for as long as I have (and for a low price)?
Another idea I have been toying with is getting a piccolo. I have played piccolo for a couple years in high school, but it was school owned so I am VERY new at buying piccolos. I plan to transfer to hopefully the University of Florida and join their marching band, but I always see just piccolos so I dont think they even march concert flutes. I love the piccolo anyway, its fun to play (and fun to annoy people with its high tone)
Both are thoughts in process. Im seeing a lot on Yamaha flutes so I may look into those. Piccolo, however, I have no clue what to look for
Thinking about either upgrading my flute or get a piccolo

Welcome! A good place to start is to read our FAQ:
http://www.fluteland.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5859
It has answers to many of your questions. Read through it and it may help you identify some recommended brands to consider. Yamaha is certainly a good option, but we can't tell you which flute or piccolo is best for you. Buying a flute is a lot like buying shoes: You have to try them and buy one that fits you. The FAQ lists a number of brands that can be a good choice. Take the list and visit a local music store to try some of them. You also need to set a budget for your purchase. The price for a good intermediate flute can range from about $1000-$5000 depending upon the brand and options (which are also listed in the FAQ).
Anyway, do a little research and then I'm sure you will have more specific questions.
