Post by flipib05 »

Hi.
I am looking at yamaha flutes and i am not sure which one? I haven't play tested any of them but i want something around $2000-$3500. There are too many different models so i am not sure which one. My current flute is a gemeinhard 3sb and i want a step up

Well, you'll have to playtest them to see which one you like, but your budget will allow for somewhere in the 500's up through the 600's new. If you go used, you might even pick up a 700 or 800 Yamaha for that much. Figure out which features you want first, and limit your options to models with those features, and then playtest them. What has made you settle on Yamahas, though? There are plenty of other makers putting out instruments in the 2K-3.5K range. Check out Muramatsu, Pearl, Amadeus, Azumi, Brio, Sonare, DiMedici, Sankyo, and Trevor James flutes as well. You can't tell if a particular make and model of flute is the best option for you simply by reading online descriptions of them.

well what made me like yamaha so much is i got chosen to play for the Francis McBeth all star honor band and there is a girl there that has a yamah flute and it sounds sooooooooooooooo beautiful. Also, i live in Idaho so all of our music stores don't carry good instruments. and i don't want to just buy one cuz i haven't play tested it

She may sound good on it, but that does not speak for how you'll sound on it. The hierarchy for sound production is Player>Headjoint>Body. The player is more important to the sound than instrument, though an instrument that matches the player is important to allow the player to get everything into the music they want to. You'll need to playtest more than just Yamahas to find the flute for you. Your budget is far too much money (IMO) to be spent without trying as many of the possible options as possible. As for being in Idaho, most reputable flute dealers like Fluteworld, the Flute Center of New York, Cincinnati Fluteworks, the Flute Specialists, etc. will ship you instruments on a trial basis, so even if you can't find the instruments I listed above locally, you can get them to test out.
