headjoint decision?

I'm about to purchase a Gemeinhardt 3SB flute. It comes with the base 'J1' standard wall headjoint. I read when buying one you have the choice to exchange the headjoint for another model. Any suggestions how to choose? Is thinwall a good choice? Could I go to the music store and ask to try different headjoints to see which i prefer?
