college auditions

Post by kuteflutegurl »

I have college auditions coming up next month, and I
was wondering if anyone has any tips. I''m playing Bozza''s Image, Bach''s
Sonata in e minor, and Mozart''s Concerto in G. I''m pretty comfortable with
the pieces, but nervous about auditioning!!

it's always good to have entire pieces learned for
auditions, which i'm sure you do, but here are some tips that i can think of.
from my own experience and my friends experiences, mozart concertos can be a
favorite asked piece. however, in the dozen times i've taken auditions, i've
never been asked to play beyond the exposition in the first movement, rarely
asked to play any of the second movement, and never asked to play the third.
occassionally, your audition committee will ask you want you would like to start
with, be confident and pick the piece that one you feel the most comfortable
with and feel will best impress the committe and two pick the piece that shows
your musicality and technique. one thing to think of before your audition or
during your audition...remember how hard you have worked to get to where you
are, think about conveying a story through the music, and don't forget that you
love playing the flute and convey that to the committee. while you're playing,
be as expressive and as musical as possible, don't be afraid to overdo the
dynamics think that you're playing in carnegie hall and the person in the last
row wants to hear every slight nuance that you make. before your audition, take
your nerves and turn them into excitement during your audition. the best
audition i ever had, was the audition where i didn't think i had a slight bit
of a chance. i went in, and i played the music for myself, (i had also been
recently inspired by the 2002 olymics on tv and watched sarah hughes skate and
saw her spirit of skating for herself because she didn't think she had a chance
to win....and i found myself crying at the end of her performance because it was
beautiful) i remind myself of that story frequently and it always seems to help.
i hope you do well!! best of luck!

There's really no way to prepare yourself, besides
knowing the music, of course. You will probably be nervous as hell, but
professors expect that. You could try practicing in front of people so you are
comfortable with other people listening to you. Just be yourself, you'll do
fine!
Cheers,

Make sure you know the piece inside and out, and not
just the notes on the page. I played Concertino by C. Chaminade When I went into
my audition I was asked simple questions about the composer. This tripped me up
because I had no idea. I was also asked some basic theory questions. A professor
played a chord on the piano and I had to hum the lowest pitch I heard. Know all
your scales, thats about it, and have fun, that is what music is all about
