I would like some opinions, please. I have to play two songs and/or etudes for my audition -- one slow and one fast. They don't have any other instructions other than that.
Do y'all think it would be better for me to play pieces that are relatively easy for me, or should I play standard repertoire pieces (i.e., Bach Partita or Telemann Fantasy) that I might not be quite as perfect on? Basically, the question is should I go for playing as perfectly as I can, or go for items that would be more impressive but not as technically correct? Also keep in mind that I expect I am going to be VERY nervous and will therefore probably not be able to give the best performance on whatever pieces I choose to play. Right now I am leaning towards playing the easier ones .....
Choosing a piece that is technically difficult shows the judges that you are willing to step out of your comfort zone and attempt something challenging. It also shows that you are interested in growing as a player, as you do not stick to the easy pieces.
The second piece should be something that shows your ability to interpret. Pick something that everyone knows and play it in your own style. That would show the judges that you can take a classic and put your own interpretation to it.
This way, you have a "comfort" piece (one you know you'll play great) and a riskier but gratifying-if-done-well piece. It will help you get through your audition to know that you will at least nail one piece-- and two, if you practice a lot.
I agree with Kshel and would also say if it is an in person audition make sure you open with the piece you feel more comfortable with. It will help you relax some and also help you make the best possible first impression.
