Styles change and today things are bit less formal than years ago. However, if you want to impress the judges, it's hard to go wrong with a suit or sport coat and tie.

It's important to dress nicely but also in a slightly flashy kind of way. You want to be memorable, so decide your attire carefully. In a competition I was in about a year ago for example, I wore: khaki dress slacks, white dress shirt with cufflinks (I wore cufflinks that would catch the light when I played), a silvery gray/blue sport coat, and a striped light blue tie. A guy in another division of the competition (next higher) wore dark slacks, blue (or green) turtleneck, and a maroon velvet jacket sport coat. So it's a matter of personal preference. For another competition I did I wore all black and a scarlet tie. As long as it is nice and has something unique that might stand out in the judge's memory, then it should be fine.

pied_piper is correct about the dress standards becoming more casual though. One girl I saw in one competition wore black jeans, a white long sleeve t-shirt with a black short sleeve t-shirt over it, and a bright orange fuzzy scarf. She won.
