My dad plays acoustic guitar. He cant read music, but he is actually really good (compared to every other guitarist I have ever heard). He isnt the best, but it is obvious that I got my musical skills from his side of the family.

Where he grew up, all of the music was passed from relative to relative, and they very rarely learned how to read music. They were just taught how to hold the instrument, and were taught music by ear, and the relatives taught one another. It was sort of "passed down" like an heirloom. So, these aural skills run in the family (and are very useful in college music theory).

I've been known to shred every now and then.
Fluteguy18, my brother is the same way. he's self taught and plays incredible well but doesn't really read music. These types tend to have really good ears.
