I need some serious help

Post by drumajorchick »

Look guys, I need help. I have to work up a little show for my church. They want me to get about five or six pieces of music and play in front of the congregation. This is all happening on December 24. I dont have any Christmas music in my possession that is worth while to play. I seriously need some suggestions and where I can get them. I dont want to go on stage and sight read. I have been only going to this church for about three weeks. I have to make a good impression.

Basic Christmas carols should be fine. I wish I had sheet music I would give you a link to, but I dont. But, a google/ yahoo search should be able to pull some up.

Really, when it comes to music, most non-musicians just want to hear what they know. Sure, a new piece is nice, but if it is really technical, usually it is lost on the 'uneducated'.

So, I am sure you could probably find some sheet music online, or borrow a hymn book at church [ most usually have christmas music in it somewhere].

I believe 8notes.com has some free Christmas music. I'm not sure, but it might be worth a look.

Thanks. I will be sure to look up something. I think I am going to look in the library and see if there is anything there too.

I'm sure the church hymnal will have several good songs you could do. Ask if you can borrow one.

astoriphile beat me to it. Just play some songs from the hymnal. Play through it one and encourage the congregation to sing with you on the other verses as you throw in some flourishes and descants. They love that.
"Oh Holy Night"
"Away in the Manger"
"O Come All Ye Faithful" are big hits.

There's a good James Galway-edited Christmas book, published by Hal Leonard, called Joy to the World. $8.95; try Amazon.com. Simple carol arrangements, with piano accompaniment. :D

Actually, I was looking in the music library at the High school and I found a book called Classic Christmas Carols For Band by David Newell. It just so happened to be a flute/piano book. I was quite ecstatic when I found it. Although it is quite simple, it will be sufficient enough for such a short time away. I like I was told, people like short, sweet, and simple.

Excellant, I'm glad you found something.

And you will do well to remember that the hymnal will also be your friend
on christmas music.
