My daughter needs to step up
beyond her beginner flute. Teachers have recommended either the Yamaha 361H or
the Gemeinhardt 3SBOSG - both having offset G keys. Someone has offered a
Gemeinhardt 3 but knows little about the flute (about as clueless as I am) but
does have the serial number. Does anyone know if I can somehow trace the serial
number to obtain more info? Tried reaching Gemeinhardt directly, but after being
passed through their phone system several times, gave up. Would appreciate any
help you could give. Thanks

Dear Dorothy, I don't know
any other way to check the model by the serial number other than contacting the
manufacturer. By the way, both Tamaha and Geimenhardt are good student flutes.
Best of luck with your search - I can only advise you that you should let your
daughter try the flutes out before you buy it. Maybe she will be able to tell
which one she likes better (if her teacher can try the flute out, that would
also be great).

Help needed by mom trying to buy a flute
Hi, I mostly just lurk here
but I thought I might have something to offer here. I am wondering if the
Gemeinhardt 3 that your friend has is the Gemeinhardt M3. That is the flute that
my daughter has. We just bought it as her step up flute in February. It is
basically the same as another Gemeinhardt..I can't remember that exact model
name but it is a open hole, solid silver head and b foot. When we chose the
flute my daughter did a blind test taking 3 different flutes into the sound
booth at the music store not knowing which was which and chose the one that was
the most comfortable and had the sound that she liked best. Well I hope this
helped it sounded like it may be the same flute with the 3 in the model name.
Good Luck, Kim

I suggest the yamaha. I have a
Yamaha YFL 481H myself and it plays beautifully. I guess it differs from person
to person but i tried various flutes, includi ng the gemeinhardt. I did not like
it that much but allow your daughter to try out various flutes and see which one
she feels ,ost comfortable with.

My suggestion would be to go
with an Emerson. The model 88 is a very good flute. The holes can be pluged in
the begining and as your daughter advances, the plugs can be removed. This is a
flute that she can grow into. What it means for you is that you wont have to go
through this process again for quite a few years. As a conservatory musician I
played ont he Emerson for 6 years. I went right from a beginner Bundy to it. I
this that is one of the best flutes out there, aside from handmade ones. Well I
hope that helps. Jeni

Gemeinhardt almost certainly
isn't an offset G without the OS in the model number. Emerson is a lower
quality flute than either the Gemeinhardt or the Yamaha. Both the Yamaha 361
(361H having the B foot) and 371 are open hole offset G flutes with silver head.
371 having the split E and known as an "Allegro" in the US and has a gold lip
plate(plated) and B foot. There also is a 371 that is sold outside of the US
that usually comes with a C foot but not the gold lip plate but both the gold an
B foot are options.(fairly certain on the foreign model) Yamaha is probably the
best value in student and step up flutes at this time in my vies. Check
Fluteworld or Music123 for more info or Yamaha.com for retailer that caries the
Allegro. Brook Mays may have the Allegro available online.

I just read where Powell is
putting out a step up flute through another division called Sonare. It has a
Powell headjoint and lesser body. Don't know much about it yet but it
defenitely would be a contender in that under $2000 market of step up flutes. Of
course some people are not crazy about Powell and their mixed metal products.
Headjoint upgrades are always a way to make a decent flute sound better.[:p]
