One for the classical buffs with huge CD collections
Although jazz is my main focus, I'd like to get an overview of the standard classical repertoire. So I'd appreciate any recommendations for ideally IN PRINT classical recordings - with a few provisos...
Especially solo (unaccompanied) flute
NO concertos
NO trios, quartets, or ensemble pieces
Preferably by a wide range of composers especially Baroque (avoiding Mozart if at all poss) up to the present day - ie any contemporary pieces that you particulary recommend
Soloist isn't relevant but preferably NOT Galway (you don't get to be a legend without being outstanding, but I just don't like his tone - everything sounds the same to me. My idea of hell would be a Mozart concerto played by Galway, but each to his own!)
I know that if someone were asking me for jazz recordings there'd be a list as long as my arm, so let's have your suggestions...
I've got my credit card at the ready...

Solo flute- unaccompanied.
Partita in A minor-- JS Bach
Syrinx-- Debussy
Danse de la Chevre-- I forgot the composer's name.
Anything in the flute music by french composer's book..... [Chaminade's Concertino, Cantabile et Presto..... etc. etc.] These pieces are sometimes called a Concerto, but usually [if not always] they are played with piano, which through technicality changes it from a concerto to a sonata. I dont think they are concertos, but they might be..... But the pieces in that book are VERY standard, and everyone would benefit from having a recording of them.
The CD "Incantation" by Eugenia Zukerman is a great compilation of unaccompanied flute works. about 70 minutes long -- has some standards like the Syrinx, Density 21.5, Danse de la Chevre, etc. plus lots of lesser known works.

Anything recorded by Alexa Still, but especially the recording with Bloch's Suite Modale, etc.

Spellbinding flute playing of the first order
Well, thanks to all for your recommendations and I'll certainly check them all out.
However, I've just this morning received a CD with THE most awesome playing I've ever heard. No kidding. And I don't make that distinction lightly. In fact, I'm just done listening to the Bach sonata for the third time in a row... The CD is 'Works For Solo Flute' perfomed by Peter-Lukas Graf. Contains Bach father and son, Marais, Karg-Elert, Burkhard, Varese, Berio and Fukushima.
Now, I'm no expert flutist (working on it though!). But I've been involved with music my whole life and it seems to me that the greatest players on any instrument require no conscious deliberation on behalf of the listener to determine just how great they are (think Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson, Jacqueline du Pre, Rachmaninoff, Horowitz, Heifetz etc). Well, I feel the same way about this guy's playing. What's so astounding to me (technical proficiency is a given) is the breadth and depth of his tone. There's just such an enormous range of colour - and it all seems so right. And talk about breath control... and here I am trying to get a nice C#!!
Anyway, I thought I'd pass this on. BTW, if anyone has any more recommendations, do please post.

A great CD to have with almost all of these pieces on it is Flute Fantasie by Susan Milan. She is an amazing musician. If you all haven't heard of her you should look her up.fluteguy18 wrote:Baz wrote:

By the way....i'm new here so...hello everyone

Hey Kat - Welcome, and thanks so much for your recommendation. I'll certainly try to find it.
I'm quite new here, too. You'll find plenty of experts who are only too willing and generous enough to share their hard-earned knowledge - usually within a day... But everyone is learning, so now you've got your first post out of the way, don't be afraid to post... (Great picture, by the way - er, where did you say you live again?)
