when it says cres. under the measure in sheet music how long do you do the cresh. for?

The music will have to dictate that, but often times (particularly in band music), there is a dynamic marking shortly or a shift in the music after it says "cresc." and you can generally assume that it crescendoing to that point is acceptable. Notation varies widely depending on the style and era of music you're playing, so in the end your ears will have to be the judge, as there is no concrete answer that is true 100% of the time.
