What pieces are you learning?

Just wondering what pieces people are learning at the moment.....

Im practising for my performance diploma in july and learning:

Telemann sonata in Fm
Faure Fantasie
Hindemith Sonata
Clarke Great Train Race

I just performed the Telemann Sonata in F on an all-baroque concert with some friends... you can hear it here: www.myspace.com/canticlepensacola
We didn't have much time to work up that concert, but it was really fun!! That recording is live... with harpsichord and bassoon as basso continuo.

I'm working on a bunch of flute/bassoon and flute/clarinet pieces for a recital a friend and I are giving in the fall. The "big" pieces (i.e. where most of my attention is going right now) are:

Gabaye - Sonata
Bozza - Sonatine
Dubois - Petite Suite

(all of those are flute/bassoon pieces... for some reason, our flute/clarinet stuff isn't so hard on me)

I just finished Debussy's Syrinx, and Bach's Eb Sonata. Next I will be starting Hymn of Pan [composer I cant remember] for the Flute Society of Kentucky's Collegiate artist competition, and probably a piece from Flute Music by French Composers.

For that, I am leaning towards either Cantabile et Presto, or the Faure Fantasie.

I do like it quite a bit. I have already learned the Cantabile part, but havent started on the Presto portion. hmmm...... decisions decisions....

It's definitely not done as often as the Faure... but often enough that's it standard repertoire, know what I mean? I think it'd be an excellent choice for a competition.

I'm currently working on Cantabile et Presto, Gaubert Fantaisie, and the Poulenc Sonata.

Very true.... if only I had a competition to play it in.....

The Flute Society of Kentucky has a specific repetoire that you have to play for the competition. Hymn of Pan, Autumn Reflections, and some other piece that I cant remember right now..... but I have until January for the competition.

Hey, Fluteguy,
Has the rep for the FSK 2008 Young Artist Competition been posted yet? I checked the website but don't see it. If you have any info, I would really appreciate it!

I am doing a joint recital in May with a colleague, and two week-long masterclasses this summer. For those, I'm working on Takemitsu's Voice, Shulamit Ran's East Wind, and the Nielsen Concerto. I am also doing The Great Train Race, for a performance at the end of the month! A friend and I are doing another Clarke piece for the May recital, his duet called 'maya'. It's really stunning, and not too difficult!

Yeah... I am not completely sure about the details, but I will be seeing my professor tomorrow, and can get all of the details for you [the 2007 event was held at my university, so we have all of the details from the official meeting... they just havent updated the site yet].

Not so many solos right now; had some orchestra & chamber gigs, and am preparing my students for their recital. I'm preparing a trio (Summer Evening) for flute, horn, and piano by Katherine Hoover, to perform on said recital with a local band director who's a great hornist! My husband and I have been reading lots of duets, some for violin and 'cello, though. On Sunday we played through the Jevtic (contemporary) flute and cello duet, and a couple early classical things by obscure composers, but which were still nice. These sorts of pieces we usually call "churchable", as we often play in churches and are constantly seeking interesting pieces which everyone in town hasn't already heard. We have a big choral concert coming up next week, featuring the Mozart Vesperae Solemnis (sp??). Tough piece, with orchestra, but we'll be singing.
Pieces my students are playing include a little Phillip Glass unaccompanied suite (very accessible--FLute World grade maybe 2+?), the C. P. E. Bach a minor sonata, Mercadante concerto, Muczynski sonata, Ibert Jeux, Ibert Aria, things form the Trevor Wye beginning book and Moyse 40 Little Pieces book, a Loeillet sonata, some simple piccolo pieces, and some duets. I'm trying to coral everyone to play one piece all together, but it's a bit like herding cats! I have some simple ensembles like My Favorite Things, Moon River, etc., but we'll see what happens.
