Hi really good at playing flute people,
Ok, I just ordered a 3-month used flute off of eBay (unless someone bids against me in 3 hours ). We're pretty sure that's it's in C, and it's closed-hole. I am going to play this as my 3rd instrument - I play saxophone and piano. I don't really know how to play . I am going to buy a flute book and I am thinking of getting a student membership here. Can you people give me some pointers about breathing and blowing? Will it be difficult because I play the saxophone? Any other tips are welcome.
If you're going to learn, and learn right, I would suggest that you get a live teacher. Some of the lessons here are decent, but they can't subsitute for a real person to observe your playing and offer hints, nor can we, no matter how detailed we try to make our responses. Breathing should be about the same as breathing for saxophone (assuming you do it right on sax)....You'll want to feel your diaphragm/abdominals expand, and the lower portions of your lungs fill first, followed by the upper part. Your stomach should expand visibly when you breathe in, and your shoulders should not rise with the breath (though if you're taking an extra large breath, they may come up ever so slightly as you fill the last recesses of your lungs). As for blowing, it'll take a good deal of time and practice to develop a good tone...After years of playing, any serious flutist will still be working on their tone on a daily basis. Work to open your airways (sometimes termed "dropping your jaw and opening your throat") for resonance, and work to focus the airstream to produce a nice clear sound. Playing flute will not be any more difficult because you play sax, but learning to adjust to the flute embouchure, and then go back and forth between the flute and sax will be a challenge at first. With some practice you'll be able to overcome any difficulties. If you're going to practice both in one sitting, I would suggest playing flute first, though.
As flutepicc said.
All i have to add is that getting the sound and right embechoure, producing a sound in the first place and higher note fingerings will be your only problems.
You will have no problem with the lower note fingerings as they are the same as the sax.
you really should look to get a real teacher as there is no substitute.
