Hi~ I am looking into buying a few more CD''s of
flute players. Right now we are BIG fans of Sir James Galway. People say to
listen to many great flutists as can learn so much that way. Any suggestions ?

Rampal His albums are easy to find and
plentiful. Plus he was very good. We have some nice collection albums with
various artists but have found it difficult to find albums by others. If you get
into Jazz flute there are of course a whole other group.

Thanks Penny..we will give him another
try. We do have one of his CD's but my daughter really didn't get hooked with
that one. I think Galway appeals to tweens like mine since he plays some
recognizable music. But my daughter has recently discovered Mozart and is now
more interested in classical music so Rampal may have more of an appeal to her
now. Kim

Um... well I'm currently reading Sir
James Galway's autobiography and he's really inspiring, I've always loved his
playing but he has worked so hard to get where he is so I really appreciate his
talent. Jean-Pierre Rampal and Marcel Moyce are fabulous flute players. Marcel
Moyce is actually one who really inspired Sir James Galway too. Trevor Wye has
an amazing technical ability. Jane Rutter, a flutist that isn't hear of as much
as the above names is also a great flute player. I love her unique style, and
she really adds character to everything she playes. All of the above players are
amazing and there are many more! I respect them all for their unique talent.

Thanks Tara, I forgot Marcel Moyse. We
have a couple of his books and were lucky enough to find a CD of his playing at
the library. Awesome stuff. Don't tell Sir James but he definetly takes a back
seat to both Moyse and Rampal to my ears. At least on classical pieces.

Baxtresser Look up every major symphony and get their flutists' names and then
look for recordings by them. You will be amazed at the differences in tone
quality and color as you discover new flutists. James Galway and Rampal tend to
have a very sweet and round "flutey tootey" kind of sound. Try to find some
unaccompanied flute recordings of modern works and you will see that the more
modern repertoire demands more tone colors and control than some of the
recordings you may have already. But, hey, I like the offbeat modern stuff so to
each his own.

Check out Sherry Winston if you want
something different, she plays more jazz style and has an album. I also have a
flute piece on CD that is really different, nothing like I've ever heard before
in the way of its style, its quite tribal and I was amazed the hear the
different styles of repetoire flute play! I got 2 Sir James Galway CD's the
other day and I was in awe, lol, he's definately one of my faves, he's a
really nice person too, I've only ever had him reply a couple of times but I
was even thrilled by that, lol!
