Flute ensemble music

Post by dionisp »

Hi all,

I've done some reading in the board for a while but this is my first post. I am part of an all-flute ensemble comprisin of 6 flutes (alternatively we can include pic and alto). Currently we are looking to expand our repertoire with new works that are originally written for more than 4 flutes.

I would be glad to hear any suggestions you have.

A lot of flute trios can be played with 6 players. I can't think of any at the moment though... sorry. And I wish I could help offer literature reccomendations for a choir 4-6 players in size, but the flute choir I play in has about 12 people. :/

Sorry I can't be of much help. I am sure there are people around here that could be of great help though!

My new fav is Winter's Journey by Lewis Kocker. It was actually published in 04, but I just got a copy. The parts are for 6 flutes with optional alto and bass parts. Ironically, this will be on of my studio's Summer Flute Choir piece

My other 2 favs (though not completely new) are A Lively Irish Dance by David Bailey written for piccolo, 2 flutes with optional alto and bass and Symphony No 1 by Lisa McArthur written for 2 flutes and optional alto and bass. Both are published by Falls House Press. Unfortunately, you will rarely find pieces with alto and no bass, but my 2 groups only have an alto, and we make it work most of the time. Views From Falls House by Gary Schocker is also a great piece, but I do not have it here right now and I am not sure of the parts.

If you are into hymn arrangements, I have a few that I self published. PM me if you are interested.

Take a look at Fluteworld's flute choir music. The bad part is you can't see it before buying, but there are tons of arrangements out there to fit your needs depending on the level of your group. Good luck!

Fluteguy trios are an alternative but they do not really work for us.
Fluttiegurl thanks for the proposals. I haven't noticed the music in fluteworld. Can someone explain in general terms the playing equivalent of the Grades (2,3,3+,4, etc.) because I am not familiar with that?

Here are some tips from my side: Tilo Medek's "The departure of the train" - impressive work- and a more traditional yet interesting approach is Simaku's Guirlande de Flutes (based on Albanian folk song melodies but not arrangement).
