Senior Recital music Help!!!

Post by Mandera3 »

So, in about a month and a half i am having my senior recital honoring my senior year in high school. This recital is my own concert featuring only me and I am trying to come up with my selections taht I want to play. I am trying to stay away from the usual pieces, with the excepetion of the Chaminade. I found that I have a lot of "pretty" pieces, or melodious, soft, expressive pieces, but I am looking for something that is a little more intense. Something not to long, and not so hard that I am going to have to slave over it during the next couple of weeks.

So far, I am playing two Gary Schocker Pieces - Green Places (My absolute favorite song) and Vocalise
also the Chaminade, and Le Flute de Pan-1st movement
I am also playing a song that I arranged that is called Angel's Flight taht is very flowy and calming and also Danny Boy due to my Irish heritage

If anyone had any suggestions I woudl greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

So far, you have a great line up (in my opinion). How long is the recital? I ask because you need to be mindful of time. You may have enough already, depending on the length of the recital itself.

I agree. IMHO, if you paced yourself well, the Chaminade could make a great closing piece for the recital.

How about Hindemith's Acht Stucke. It's for solo flute. It should be quite accessible for a senior in high school. It's not very difficult or long. It's very different than everything else you have chosen.

the length of the recital is unlimited. Obviously I'm not gonna go too long because has much as I love the flute, I think that most people, unless they are also flute lovers, will get bored after awhile of only flute on piano.

That reminds me of something. When my students perform their senior recitals, I always request that they do something fun (other than standard) like a hymn or something especially dedicated to their families and friends who may not understand music. This helps them to connect and gives an added bones to the audience.

Play some more Celtic songs. Something faster than Dany Boy. Get a couple of your favorite tunes together and get a Bodhran beat from someone.

Three are some much nicer 'Irish' pieces out there than Danny Boy - perhaps try the Irish Washerwoman, with variations. Or 'An Sionnach Siodh' which begins slowly and then builds up speed. Or, 'An Chualainn' which is a beautiful slow air.

I'm Irish [born and bred and living there] so if you've any queries, feel free to contact me x3

In my opinion, anyone who wants to play Celtic music on the flute or fiddle should have this:

http://ca.groups.yahoo.com/group/ottawa ... am%20Book/

It is a large book in three volumes that you print off, hole-punch, and keep in a binder along with the included index. It has any Celtic song that you would ever encounter.

Or you could just find a song you like and print that page off.

Some of my favorites are:
The Butterfly
The Drunken Piper
The Belfast Hornpipe
The Swallowtail
Morrison's
The Road to Lisdoonvarna
Dan O'Keefe's
Staten Island Hornpipe

You have to join the group to access it. :/

Anyway, once my membership is approved, I might find it useful. I annually perform in a Madrigal/ Renaissance dinner/concert. And, there is a venue opening up nearby that will have a lot of "Olde World" events.

Oh, my bad. It's worth it though, the collection is fantastic.

I can upload it somewhere else if you need me to.
