Hello Fluteshoot
Welcome to the wonderful world of fluting.
If you do not mind, I would like to make some remarks on what you posted.
I'm striking out on my own as I've stopped lessons for now to have a baby (due in four weeks ).
Congratulations on your baby. Lessons are good to a point, but in the end, better flute players are very self motivated. Teachers cannot control how much their student practices. There is enough material out there for you to be successful.
I'm becoming interested in jazz flute and suspect I'll pop up here asking for advice before long...!
Good. Just keep in mind that is is just as difficult to be a good Jazz flautists as it is a classical one. In fact, I would recommend that you get to at least a intermediate classical level before venturing off into Jazz. While classical players are generally better sight readers. This is mainly due to most flute players playing in groups and orchestras. However, unless a classical player is a soloist, a classical player does not rely as much on memorization, or improvising. Playing jazz is almost ALL memorization. I know great jazz players that are no good at classical, and know classical players that are no good at jazz. One style is really no easier than the other.
Another thing I would suggest is start checking out saxophone methods. There is not a lot of good material out there for jazz flute.
Welcome aboard!
