Flute Teachers!

hey "ilovetheflute"! Christina Jennings just put up a new video on youtube of her performing a premiere of a piece composed by one of the composition faculty at CU Boulder, Carter Pann. It's called "Mercury Concerto." I think it would give you a good idea to see her perform live and hear how good she is!!-

she told me that she values the one-on-one relationship with her students more than getting a "big studio" so that might be a difference between boulder and northwestern... my teacher said northwestern and indiana are like factories they're so big, and from the time i spent with ms. jennings, she seemed like a very nice person i asked her how big her studio was and she said 11 and this fall it was going to get bumped up to 15 at the most, so the fact that you got in is amazing, and with a 20 grand scholarship/yr that is really saying something of course, you totally have a right to go wherever you want and to reject her if you want, but i think you should not treat this so trivially, Christina Jennings is a rising star and a humble, wonderful woman who will teach you as well as anyone in your flute progress and I think that under her you will go as far as you are able to go. Just my 2 cents

oh one more thing: check out this guy; i think this is success definitely in the same ranks and flute league as those people coming from schools such as Rice, Oberlin, and Carnegie Mellon.. (this guy's a student of Ms. Jennings and his name is Cobus du Toit)

29 April 2009 Cobus just got accepted into the National Flute Association's Young Artist Compettion. The competition will take place during the second week of August 2009 in New York City.
23 March 2009 Cobus just got accepted as a participant in the Sarasota Music Festival in Sarasota, Florida.
14 March 2009 Cobus won the Byron Hester Flute Competition in Houston ,Texas. He will also be giving a recital at the Houston Flute Club's annual festival in 2010.
7 March 2009 Cobus advanced as one of the finalists for the William Byrd Competition in Flint, MI and was one of the placewinners at the competition.
13 January 2009 The Antero Winds will make their New York debut on the 18th of January at the New School campus in New York City. Look under the Concerts tab for more information.
9 November 2008

Cobus received an invitation for a live audition at the Metropolitan Opera for their principal flute chair. Auditions will take place during the first week of December in New York City.
13 October 2008

Cobus made it to the final round of the Honors Concerto Competition at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO. Cobus performed the Nielsen Flute Concerto.
23 August 2008 Cobus won the SAMRO Overseas Music Scholarship Competition in Johannesburg, South Africa. The competiiton took place at the University of Johannesburg during the final week of August.
15 July 2008 Cobus recently commissioned a three-movement work for flute and piano from the composer Neill van der Watt. Van der Watt is the head of the music department at Pretoria Boys High School. Van der Watt has also arranged a significant amount of traditional African music for choir as well as setting leading Afrikaans poetry to music, including the works of Antjie Krog and N.P. van Wyk Louw.

Yeah I have heard that about Northwestern and Indiana too. I am happy about going to Boulder, but I just had my heart on Northwestern. Also I am sure that Northwestern is overall a better music school. It seems the flute studio at Boulder is the most well know, but I could be wrong. Since I love orchestra, I do not know how high level it is going to be at Boulder. I wonder how many people audition for undergrad? I guess getting in is pretty good. I do not doubt her, but I just don't want to be at a disadvantage for getting an orchestral job......like if I did go to NEC or Northwestern etc. I guess it is all at how I look at it and how hard I work. I really value your opinion btw. You seem to know what you are talking about!

yeah you're right Northwestern is better as a music school

you could be right about the orchestra at Boulder I have no idea and frankly, i'm sure it is better at northwestern

well the thing is i'm in the same shoes you are i am also going to a school to kind of just "try it out" so i know what it feels like to not know if it's going to be a promising fulfillment of your dreams + hard work, etc. and i'm most worried about what will happen if i just hate the school so much and have to re-audition/ apply, etc. that would really suck lol

ugh I know exactly how you feel ! I don't want to think about transfering, but I am and I just can't get Northwestern out of my head. And the thing is I got into the flute studio and they made a mistake with my grades and they would not admit that they were wrong. I just hate that. Where do you think you want to transfer too. Boulder?

they made a mistake with your grades??! that's total crap! you should have had a way of getting in there then... in fact, you still should have a way of going there... crazy!

yes i think i would transfer to boulder, if i got in, because christina jennings is my favorite flute player, and i just realized boulder also has a weather degree i could double-major in to get a more practical degree in also

either that or carnegie mellon, mrs. baxtresser is the nicest lady... but yeah i think i'd need a lot more work in my flute-playing before i could audition for her again.

has ms jennings told you anything about if she's on maternity leave for the fall or anything? cause that would kinda suck! if she was, i would fight that case with northwestern and win it since it's your dream school and you reallly wanna go there.

yeah they did and my weighted gpa was 4.29 ! They just will not change their admission decision. I do not think she is going on leave, so no worries there. Is there a big difference in the weather between Denver and Boulder?

boulder probably gets a little more snow, and little more cold and wind, etc. because it's closer up to the mountains, and denver is a big city, you know, but really they're not that far apart so it's not a Huge change weather-wise. But culture wise, Boulder is a real hippie/liberal/pot-smoking town (I'm not trying to say anything bad about it bc maybe you would like that a lot) but I think the ppl in Boulder even sometimes think they are separate from the rest of the U.S. because they are so different from everyone. Did you have an on-campus Audition/ Lesson with Ms. Jennings? Btw, I only know about the weather & culture stuff cuz I live only a little bit away from Colo. and I used to have all kinds of family up there... it's like a "second Home State" for me

yeah I figured that since it was closer to the mountains. Yes I did do a live audition/mini lesson with her. Boulder seemed.....nice I guess. I actually had 100 fever and had a really bad cough so it was actually really hard to enjoy haha
