Yamaha 211 made in Q & Jupiter 507, need outside&'ba

Hey fluteland flute masters & lovers! I am primary a sax player and am playing flute in my reggae band now too. I also have recently (6 months ago) picked up my 'good' or 'inside' flute after many years away (a Yamaha 674, love it!) and play in my local flute choir and in my college wind ensemble and in the church orchestra. There is no way in heck that I am willing to bring my 674 into a smokey bar or play it outside, it's just too nice a flute, plus when doubling, especially on a long gig and after playing alto & soprano sax, a student model flute will be the easiest to blow and produce a good tone on (Phineas taught me that

SO! I went to Sam Ash last night and played a Jupiter 507-II (which I came home with) a used Armstrong, used Artley, a new Gemeinhardt (sp) and a new Yamaha 211. Out of all the flutes I played last night I liked the Yamaha 211 the best. It felt so good and had a really nice tone. My second pick was the Jupiter. The ONLY reason I didn't buy the Yamaha is because it was made in Indonesia and I wanted to ask ya'll here about your experiences with these flutes being made in China. Do they hold up, are they reliable, how is build quality after a few months of use?

Oh and since I bought it a Sam Ash, I can return it within 30 days to get a full refund. I was thinking about going back and getting the 211 to play with at home and see what I thought.

No, don't quote me on that I think it was a 211, anyway, it was a new and not used flute!

Well, Yamaha makes their flutes in a lot of different places. People SAY they can tell the difference. All in all, Yamaha is exceptional about maintaining this quality standards not matter where it is made.

Jupiters are made in Taiwan mostly. In recent years, these have become a reputable brand as well. I own a Jupiter CEF510 and it is a great flute for the money. It is just flexible enough to do intermediate pieces, with out costing $1500

For me, the Jupiter has a more flexible head joint, but the Yamaha CY head joint is easier to play. The Yamaha 211 is a little more durable than the Jupiter 507.

It is a toss up really, however the Jupiter will give you more bang for the buck playability wise.

My suggestion would be to give the Jupiter a little more time. You may decide you like it better then the Yamaha. Not to mention you will save some money as well.

If you are bent on Yamahas, Samash has been known to stock a few used Yamaha 225. This is a nice flute as well, and they usually sell them for around $200 - 250 Used. You can have them call around and see if any are available at one of their other stores. They are good abought shipping between stores!

Hey, i play a Yamaha 211 and I love it! Being (very) new to the flute, I can't tell you that much about it, since I have no performance experience with it, but as you know it plays and sounds very nice! I've researched a lot on the internet before buying this, and everywhere I've looked the 211 has been described as a very good overall flute, and one of the best beginner flutes!

Regarding where its made, like Phineas said, with Yamaha being such a big and respected company, im pretty sure they strive to maintain the same quality with all their instruments, regardless of what factory its made in. If thats not the case, they would probably have cheaper and more expensive versions (similair to fender guitars). I must admit I don't know where my 211 was made, but I can definitely recommend the flute! Go get it, tiger!

I did end up going back for the Yamaha! It is a 221 too and the sounds is just beautiful! Really different compared to the Jupiter and it feels more responsive in my hands too. SO! I think I'm going to stick with the Yamaha and return the Jupiter.
